For some strange reason there are some dishes that we shy away from just because they seem too different or too exotic or just too something, as indefinable as that something might be. It is entirely possible that the humble calzone might fall into that category. Maybe it's the name 'CALZONE' that causes the problem, and if it is then all you need to do is call it an outside-in pizza because that's really what it is. And maybe one of the reasons we shy away from making pizza, one of the world's most loved foods, is because we don't want to be bothered making pizza dough. But did you know that you don't need to worry about that anymore because you can go down to your friendly neighborhood bakery and buy dough already made and ready to be rolled out? With the dough made for you, there is really nothing easier than rolling it out, spreading on a little pizza sauce and frying up some sausage and veggies and then spreading them on the dough and sprinkling on a little cheese. Then all you do is fold it in half, seal the edges and bake it until the dough is golden brown. Take it out, cut it in half and you have a meal fit for a king or at at the very least fit for a pizza lover or, rather, an outside-in pizza lover. Here are the ingredients:
1 lb. pre-made dough brought to room temperature
1 T. pizza seasoning
1 lb. Italian sausage
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 green pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 lb. fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 small tomato, thinly sliced
1 C. Mozarella cheese
1/2 C. Parmesan cheese
1. After the dough has come to room temperature, divide it in half and roll into two rounds.
3. Cut up the vegetables and fry in oil until tender. Sprinkle with pizza seasoning, salt and pepper.
4. Grate the cheese and set it aside.
4. Grate the cheese and set it aside.
6. Divide the sauteed sausage and veggies and put on one half of the dough rounds. Add the sliced tomatoes.
